Sip of History
18th Century: The Birth of Coffee in the Americas
In 1714, Amsterdam gifted King Louis XIV a young coffee tree, planted in Paris. Years later, naval officer Gabriel de Clieu bravely carried one seedling across storms and pirates to Martinique—where it flourished and became the ancestor of millions of coffee trees across the Americas.
Later, coffee reached Brazil thanks to Francisco de Mello Palheta, who charmed the French Governor’s wife into gifting him a bouquet secretly filled with coffee seeds—sparking Brazil’s billion-dollar coffee industry.
