Sip of History

17th Century: Coffee Conquers Europe

By the 1600s, coffee reached Europe—hailed by some, condemned by others as the “bitter invention of Satan.” Pope Clement VIII settled the debate after tasting it and giving his approval.

Coffeehouses soon spread across major cities, becoming “penny universities” where one could buy both a cup and conversation. Replacing morning beer and wine, coffee fueled focus and work—and even inspired business ventures like Lloyd’s of London, which began in a coffeehouse.

Coffee Buzz

Wellness in Every Sip

Coffee isn’t just a caffeine kick anymore — it’s becoming a mindful ritual. More people are rethinking what they drink and how it makes them feel. The new generation of coffee lovers want a brew that energises without the crash, supports focus, and even nourishes the body.

That’s why low-acid, clean-label, and functional coffees are trending hard. You’ll see more blends infused with adaptogens (like ashwagandha or lion’s mane for calm and clarity), mushroom extracts, and natural nootropics for smoother energy. There’s also a growing buzz around gut-friendly roasts and antioxidant-rich beans, appealing to health-conscious sippers who care as much about wellness as flavour.

Spooky Cinnamon Mocha (Halloween Coffee)

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot espresso or ½ cup strong brewed coffee
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (unsweetened or dark)
  • 1 cup milk (dairy, oat, or almond milk)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or maple syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 drop vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream
  • Orange or black sprinkles (optional — for Halloween flair!)
  • Tiny pinch of sea salt (optional, enhances chocolate flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Brew the base:
Make your espresso or strong coffee

  2. Make the mocha magic:
In a small saucepan, mix cocoa powder, cinnamon, sugar, and a splash of milk to form a paste.
Add the rest of the milk and whisk gently over medium heat until warm and slightly frothy.

  3. Blend and brew:
Pour the chocolate-cinnamon milk into your coffee and stir in the vanilla extract.
Add a tiny pinch of salt if you like deeper chocolate notes.

  4. Top it off:
Finish with whipped cream, a dusting of cocoa or cinnamon, and a few Halloween touches — like orange sprinkles or a drizzle of dark chocolate syrup.
